Patna, Feb 6 (NationPress) A man accused of motorcycle theft tragically died under unclear circumstances at the Kanti police station in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district on Thursday.
The victim, Shivam Kumar Jha (35), a resident of Kalwari village, was taken into custody by the Kanti police on Tuesday.
On Thursday morning, he was discovered deceased in the police lock-up, with officials hinting at suicide as a possible cause.
In light of this incident, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sushil Kumar announced the suspension of the Station House Officer (SHO) Sudhakar Pandey along with two other police personnel due to negligence.
The circumstances surrounding the death have sparked considerable unrest among Jha's family and the residents of Kalwari village, who accuse the police of misconduct and demand a comprehensive investigation.
SSP Sushil Kumar remarked, "The CCTV footage indicates that Shivam Jha died under suspicious conditions while in custody.
"Preliminary findings suggest that there was negligence on the part of the officer and constable on duty. Additionally, the SHO's negligence is also evident. All three have been suspended. As this case involves a custodial death in police lock-up, we are adhering to the protocols established by the National Human Rights Commission and the Supreme Court," he stated.
The situation escalated as residents from Kalwari and neighboring villages congregated at the police station, where they vandalized the premises. This prompted senior police officials, including the City SP, Rural SP, City DSP, and Western DSP, to remain on-site to manage the unrest and initiate an investigation.
The victim's family has accused the police of homicide in custody, claiming that Shivam was apprehended two days earlier on allegations of motorcycle theft, along with two friends, before being found dead.
