Patna, March 26 (NationPress) In a significant administrative action in Muzaffarpur, SSP Kanthesh Kumar Mishra has suspended the entire police raiding squad that was part of the contentious Gaighat incident, including the former SHO Raja Singh.

This decision comes in light of an inquiry report presented by Rural SP Rajesh Kumar, which revealed critical failures in the execution of the raid that took place on the night of March 17–18, 2026, in Chorniya village, within the jurisdiction of the Gaighat police station.

The investigation uncovered that the police team encountered severe opposition from local residents during the operation, which included stone-throwing, assaults with sticks, and even gunfire.

In the midst of this turmoil, it was reported that SHO Raja Singh discharged his weapon into the air to evade the chaos; however, it resulted in the tragic death of a local individual, Jagatveer Rai.

The inquiry pointed out numerous glaring deficiencies, notably that the raid proceeded without sufficient personnel or accurate intelligence. Furthermore, the raiding team disregarded prior resistance faced in the same village during an earlier operation, which had not been adequately addressed.

Additionally, the report indicated that the team failed to maintain composure, allowing the situation to worsen, culminating in an intelligence breakdown. A watchman, Prahlad Kumar, did not inform the team of possible dangers or the history of the suspects.

Consequently, the Muzaffarpur SSP has suspended Raja Singh, the former SHO of Gaighat police station, along with Manish Kumar, a sub-inspector, Ranjan Kumar (PTC), Chandni Kumari (Lady Constable), Om Prakash (Driver Constable), and Prahlad Kumar (Watchman).

Moreover, a recommendation has been forwarded to the District Magistrate for disciplinary measures against the Home Guard personnel who participated in the operation.

This decisive action by the district police has stirred significant reactions within the department and is perceived as a move to uphold accountability amid escalating worries over policing strategies and law-and-order challenges in Bihar.

The Muzaffarpur SSP's actions followed a visit from Tejashwi Yadav, the opposition leader in the Bihar Assembly, who visited the affected village to offer condolences to the bereaved family on Wednesday.

Yadav has also accused the SHO of allegedly shooting the farmer Jagatveer Rai after entering his residence.

Point of View

The actions taken by the Bihar Police reflect a significant step towards accountability in law enforcement. As communities demand better policing practices, such measures are crucial for restoring public trust and ensuring justice.
