Tejashwi Yadav Visits Family of Victim from Muzaffarpur Police Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, March 25 (NationPress) Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in Bihar's Assembly, made a visit to Gaighat in Muzaffarpur on Wednesday to express his condolences to the family of Jagatveer Rai, the elderly man tragically killed during a police operation.
In a poignant meeting, he expressed his sympathies before launching a pointed critique of the Nitish Kumar government and the local authorities.
Though he refrained from naming individuals, Tejashwi accused a certain Sub-Inspector of being protected by a notable leader from the Janata Dal (United), whom he referred to as someone who believes he is the Chief Minister of Muzaffarpur.
He called for the immediate arrest and rigorous action against the officer involved.
Speaking to the press, Tejashwi Yadav demanded prompt and equitable justice, emphasizing that the actions of the police are under serious scrutiny.
“Should the officer in question remain unapprehended and justice be postponed, the Rashtriya Janata Dal will initiate a statewide protest—from the streets to the Assembly—to increase pressure on the government,” he declared.
The incident unfolded on March 18 in Chornia village, located within the Gayghat police station jurisdiction, where police had arrived to apprehend a suspect related to a case involving the POCSO Act.
A violent confrontation erupted between the villagers and police, resulting in injuries to several police personnel and damage to government vehicles.
Amidst the turmoil, Jagatveer Rai, aged 60, was fatally shot, escalating tensions in the area.
The family of the victim has accused the then Station House Officer (SHO) of intentionally shooting him.
Conversely, the police assert that the gunfire was a defensive response to a life-threatening assault from the crowd.
Due to the gravity of the situation, a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory has been dispatched to gather evidence, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under a magistrate's supervision to guarantee an unbiased investigation.
Currently, Chornia village remains tense yet stable. Despite the establishment of a special police team and ongoing investigations led by a magistrate, political activity is notably heightened.
All attention is now directed toward the investigation report to ascertain whether evidence supports the police's claim of self-defense or validates Tejashwi Yadav's murder allegations.
The victim's family, along with the villagers, continues to await decisive action from the local administration, clinging to the hope of justice.
