Amaravati, Oct 27 (NationPress) — Cyclone Montha in the Bay of Bengal is swiftly approaching the Andhra Pradesh coastline and is expected to escalate into a severe cyclone prior to making landfall near Kakinada on Tuesday night, according to officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority on Monday.
The coastal districts are under high alert due to forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds gusting up to 110 km/h.
On Monday morning, the APSDMA reported that the deep depression had intensified into a cyclonic storm.
The cyclone has been moving at a speed of 15 km/h over the past six hours and is currently located 560 km from Chennai, 620 km from Kakinada, and 650 km from Visakhapatnam, said Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of APSDMA.
As the cyclone nears the coastline, its impact is expected to grow. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates that it may strengthen into a severe cyclone by Tuesday morning, making landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on Tuesday night.
