New Delhi, July 18 (NationPress) The Drain Road adjacent to the Dabri roundabout in western Delhi has been identified as the city's most hazardous location, recording an alarming average of 11 road accidents each year due to waterlogging between July and September, as per the latest data released by the Delhi Traffic Police on Friday.
In addition to this notorious roundabout, there are approximately 193 other waterlogging hotspots throughout the city, which collectively accounted for nearly 400 accidents last year. An official noted that waterlogging has been a significant contributing factor in nearly all incidents reported at these locations during the monsoon season.
To mitigate waterlogging-related accidents this year, the traffic police have provided a list of 194 hotspots to civic agencies during pre-monsoon discussions, urging for infrastructural improvements to facilitate the smooth drainage of rainwater at these critical points, according to a senior official.
This report has been sent to the Delhi Jal Board, Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), highlighting the dangers posed by waterlogging at these locations.
Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Dinesh Kumar Gupta, stated that the second most perilous road segment concerning waterlogging-related accidents is the stretch of Rohtak Road between Mundka and Tikri Border, which recorded 10 accidents due to waterlogging last year.
The most frequent issue identified at these sites is the drainage system being at a higher elevation than the roadway, resulting in significant water accumulation.
A poorly designed drainage system was responsible for causing nine accidents related to waterlogging last year at the Khanpur T-point on the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road from July to September, while eight incidents were noted on GTK Depot Road.
To compile the list of 194 accident-prone locations, the traffic police segmented the city into two zones to enhance traffic management oversight.
Additional accident-prone areas on the list include Minto Bridge, Minto Road to DDU Kali Marg, Rohtak Road from Nangloi to Mundka, and areas around ISBT Kashmere Gate, Rajghat, and others.
According to Additional CP (Traffic) Gupta, traffic and civic personnel have been deployed at these hotspots to avert further incidents.
