New Delhi, July 15 (NationPress) As Indian astronaut and IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla makes his triumphant return from a two-week mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), a political controversy ignites regarding his caste background.
The uproar arose from remarks made by Congress leader Udit Raj, who criticized the government’s alleged bias in selecting astronauts, suggesting that Dalits are being denied equal opportunities.
Udit Raj commended Shubhanshu Shukla for his significant achievements, expressing hope that they benefit humanity. Yet, he asserted that individuals from marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, are being overlooked.
“During Rakesh Sharma's mission, there were few educated individuals from SC/ST/OBC backgrounds. This time, a candidate from these communities should have been considered. The selection was governmental, not exam-based. An OBC/SC/ST individual could have represented us instead of Shukla,” he stated to IANS.
As a Dalit leader himself, Udit Raj expressed his best wishes for the safe return of the space shuttle. However, his statements faced backlash, even from within the Congress party.
Congress MP Manoj Kumar from Bihar warned against politicizing national and strategic issues.
“While there’s a legitimate concern for the upliftment of backward communities, leveraging Shubhanshu Shukla's success for political gain is inappropriate now,” he commented.
BJP leader Ram Kadam countered Udit Raj's assertions, arguing that such demanding roles rely on intellectual capabilities and professional expertise, not caste.
“He understands that caste or religion are irrelevant in such selections. This seems more like a publicity stunt or an effort to sway the Bihar elections by infusing a casteist narrative into the matter,” Kadam remarked.
Meanwhile, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, which carries Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla along with three other astronauts on the Axiom-4 Mission, is poised for a splashdown in the Pacific off the coast of Southern California today. The splashdown is anticipated at 3 PM IST.
