Mumbai, April 2 (NationPress) On Thursday, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth inaugurated the INS Sunayna, an Offshore Patrol Vessel of the Indian Navy, which embarked from Mumbai as the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR. This action emphasizes India’s dedication to ensuring regional maritime security and fostering international collaboration, according to official reports.
The vessel is manned by crew members from India alongside personnel representing 16 maritime forces from Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs), as indicated in a statement.
Naval Chief Dinesh K. Tripathi pointed out the changing maritime dynamics characterized by increasing competition, illegal unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, piracy, drug trafficking, and a struggle over vital resources. He stressed the importance of collaborative strategies to maintain a free, open, and secure Indian Ocean.
“The gathering of 16 like-minded maritime nations for a common goal through the IOS SAGAR initiative is both rare and significant in this complex maritime landscape,” stated Admiral Tripathi.
Minister Seth remarked that the IOS SAGAR initiative embodies India’s unified vision of “leadership through partnership, strength through unity, and progress through peace”.
He noted the recent return of INSV Kaundinya from Oman, symbolizing the strengthening of maritime ties between the two nations. He further emphasized that the IOS SAGAR 2026 initiative aims to build upon this spirit of engagement, extending it into a more comprehensive and inclusive framework of regional partnerships.
“A free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific is beneficial for all nations,” citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Seth highlighted India’s commitment to the Neighbourhood First policy and the Vision MAHASAGAR - Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
He reiterated that the IOS SAGAR is a tangible expression of the MAHASAGAR vision, bringing partner nations together on a shared platform for training, collaboration, and collective readiness, showcasing that maritime security is most effective when established through cooperation and shared accountability.
