New Delhi, Aug 5 (NationPress) The Defence Acquisition Council, led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has given the green light for a range of military hardware acquisitions amounting to approximately Rs 67,000 crore. Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) has been granted for the procurement of Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sight for the Indian Army's BMP fleet, enhancing night driving capabilities and offering greater mobility and operational benefits to the Mechanised Infantry, as per an official announcement.
For the Indian Navy, AoN has been approved for the acquisition of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, BrahMos Fire Control System & Launchers, and the upgrade of the BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System. The Compact Autonomous Surface Craft will empower the navy to detect, classify, and neutralize threats during anti-submarine warfare operations, the statement indicated.
In regard to the Indian Air Force, AoN was also granted for the procurement of mountain radars and the enhancement of the SAKSHAM/SPYDER weapon system. The new mountain radars will bolster air surveillance capabilities along and across borders in mountainous regions. Upgrading the SAKSHAM/SPYDER System for integration with the Integrated Air Command and Control System will strengthen air defense capabilities, the statement elaborated.
Additionally, AoN was sanctioned for the acquisition of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) across all three Services. These MALE RPAs are designed to carry multiple payloads and weapons, operating over extended ranges for prolonged missions. They are expected to significantly enhance the armed forces' surveillance and combat proficiencies, according to the statement.
The DAC has also approved AoN for the maintenance of C-17 and C-130J aircraft in the Indian Air Force fleet, along with a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System, as stated.
Furthermore, last month, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of Air Defence Fire Control Radars for the army, valued at approximately Rs 2,000 crore. With a minimum of 70 percent indigenous content, these radars will detect various airborne threats, including fighter jets, attack helicopters, and enemy drones. This procurement represents a significant step forward in modernizing the Air Defence Regiments and enhancing the army's operational readiness.
