New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Thursday approved various acquisitions for the armed forces, paving the way for the purchase of Rafale jets, combat missiles, anti-tank mines, and P-8i aircraft among others.
The decision to acquire six additional P-8i reconnaissance aircraft is a significant advancement for the Indian Navy, enhancing its maritime capabilities, improving surveillance, and serving as a vital asset for safeguarding the nation’s strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region.
During a meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the DAC sanctioned capital acquisition initiatives worth Rs 3.60 lakh crore, which will greatly enhance the operational readiness and combat effectiveness of the armed forces.
The Indian maritime zone remains a critical area since approximately 70-80% of global trade transits through it. The Indian Navy is actively expanding its fleet with new warships and aircraft to protect maritime borders.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, "The addition of P-8I aircraft will greatly bolster the Navy's capabilities in long-range anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and strike operations."
This procurement will be made from the United States, with the terms for the P-8i long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US last year.
The Indian Navy already operates P-8I aircraft, having purchased a total of 12 from the United States. Initially, eight P-8i aircraft were acquired in 2009, followed by four more in 2016.
The P-8I is distinguished by its capability to detect and engage submarines concealed deep underwater while operating at altitudes of up to 41,000 feet. It boasts a range of up to 8,300 kilometers and features 11 hardpoints—five internal and six external on the wings. This aircraft can deploy Harpoon anti-ship missiles, cruise missiles, lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine warfare charges, and mines, and is equipped with a sophisticated multi-mission surface search radar.
