New Delhi, April 20 (NationPress) The death toll from the building collapse in Mustafabad, Delhi, has reached 11, with three others currently receiving medical care at the hospital. Among the deceased are seven members of a single family, including 60-year-old Tehsin, the building's owner, his son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and another daughter-in-law.

The disaster took place in D1 Gali, Dayalpur, when a four-storey structure collapsed at approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday, trapping 22 individuals under the debris. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with eight victims having been discharged after treatment.

Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the reasons behind the collapse.

Preliminary concerns suggest a compromised foundation, as locals reported that the base of the building was merely four inches thick. However, the precise cause will be determined following a thorough investigation.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her sympathies and promised stringent actions against those responsible.

In a post on X, she remarked, “I am profoundly saddened by the heartbreaking incident of the building collapse in Mustafabad. An investigation has been initiated, and strict measures will be enforced against those at fault. DDMA, NDRF, DFS, and other agencies are actively involved in relief and rescue efforts. Proper arrangements have been made for the treatment of all injured parties.”

Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly and local MLA, Mohan Singh Bisht, stated, "This is certainly a tragic and deeply sorrowful incident, particularly since the victims hailed from impoverished families. The builder deceived them, disregarding construction quality, structural integrity, and safety, all in pursuit of profit. In this process, innocent lives were lost, which is truly heartbreaking."

“I have urged the L-G and MCD Commissioner to take action against negligent officials. There are illegal constructions throughout Mustafabad, and this event has unveiled the pervasive corruption within agencies like the MCD,” he added earlier during his site visit.

Previously, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East), Sandeep Lamba, confirmed that four of the 14 individuals initially rescued later succumbed to their injuries. He also mentioned that 8-10 people were still feared to be trapped during the initial phases of the rescue.

Mohan Shaheedi of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stated that teams carried out technical searches utilizing trained rescue dogs and equipment to find survivors in potential air pockets beneath the rubble.
