New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) Four individuals have lost their lives and numerous others are feared to be trapped after a building caved in the Mustafabad locality of Delhi early Saturday morning, according to police reports.
The tragedy occurred around 3 a.m., as stated by the authorities.
Delhi Police confirmed, “Four people died when a building collapsed in the Mustafabad area this morning.”
Sandeep Lamba, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for the North East District, reported that 14 individuals were rescued.
Lamba further noted, “... 14 people were saved, but unfortunately, four of them passed away... it was a four-storey structure... rescue operations are ongoing. Eight to ten individuals are still believed to be trapped.”
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and a dog squad are actively involved in the rescue efforts.
This incident occurred shortly after a sudden change in Delhi's weather on Friday night, marked by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that affected various parts of the city.
In a separate incident the previous week, a wall from an under-construction building collapsed during a severe dust storm near Madhu Vihar police station, resulting in one death and two injuries.
The four-storey building housed approximately 20 to 25 residents. So far, 8 individuals have been rescued and transported to GTB Hospital for medical care.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear.
Rajendra Atwal, Divisional Fire Officer, mentioned that the fire department received a call around 2:50 a.m..
“We received a call about a building collapse at approximately 2:50 a.m. ... Upon arrival, we discovered that the entire structure had fallen, trapping people beneath the rubble... NDRF and the Delhi Fire Service are engaged in rescue operations,” he stated.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the sky will be “partly cloudy” in the morning, transitioning to “generally cloudy” by evening.
Light rain or drizzle is probable, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and dust storms, with winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h in the evening.
Expected maximum and minimum temperatures are around 38 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
