A chartered accountant's delivery boy and two accomplices were arrested in north Delhi for staging a fake robbery and making off with ₹6.5 lakh in office cash, police said on Sunday, 10 May 2026. The staged snatching took place in Wazirabad on 4 May, when the accused was tasked with delivering the money to a client in Rajendra Place.

How the Staged Robbery Unfolded

Ayush Mishra, 20, a resident of Burari who worked as a delivery boy for a chartered accountant in Wazirabad, reportedly conspired with two associates — Ashu, 28, and Akash, 33, both also residents of Burari — roughly 4 to 5 days before the incident. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North District) Raja Banthia, the three planned to steal the employer's cash during a routine delivery run.

As per the plan, Ashu provided a motorcycle to Ayush for carrying the cash. Once Ayush received the money and set off, Ashu and Akash followed him on a second motorcycle — owned by Akash's father — and snatched the cash bag near Shiv Mandir, Wazirabad, at approximately 3:30 pm IST. The two then rode toward Khajoori before making a U-turn, reportedly to mislead investigators. The trio later divided the stolen amount among themselves, citing financial difficulties.

CCTV Footage and Suspicious Gaps Cracked the Case

Police registered FIR No. 185/26 dated 4 May under Sections 304(2)/3(5) BNS at Police Station Wazirabad, based on Ayush's initial complaint that two unknown motorcycle-borne individuals had snatched his bag. However, investigators quickly grew suspicious. Analysis of CCTV footage from the incident site and surrounding routes revealed Ayush smiling while the alleged snatchers followed him — a detail that raised immediate red flags.

A further inconsistency deepened suspicion: the snatching occurred at around 3:30 pm, yet Ayush did not call police until 6 pm — a gap of nearly two and a half hours. When questioned about the delay, he could not offer a satisfactory explanation. He also changed his statements multiple times during interrogation before eventually breaking down and confessing to his role in the scheme, police said.

Arrests Made, Full Amount Recovered Within 24 Hours

Police said they cracked the case within 24 hours of registration. Acting on Ayush's disclosure, officers recovered ₹2.5 lakh from him directly. His confession also led to the arrest of Ashu and Akash. A further ₹2 lakh was recovered from Ashu's shop, and the remaining ₹2 lakh was seized from Akash's residence. Two motorcycles used in the staged robbery were also recovered.

This incident highlights a recurring pattern of insider fraud in small businesses, where trusted employees exploit access to cash in transit. The swift resolution — aided by CCTV analysis and behavioural inconsistencies — underscores the growing role of surveillance infrastructure in urban crime detection.
