Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday, 10 August distributed bicycles to girl students under the Vidya Vahini Yojana at the Delhi Assembly, drawing an emotional response from several women beneficiaries present at the event. The initiative is part of the Delhi government's stated push to improve girls' access to education and foster self-reliance among young women in the capital.

What the Vidya Vahini Yojana Offers

Under the scheme, girl students who reach Class 9 are provided bicycles to ease their daily commute to school, reducing a key barrier to regular attendance. Chief Minister Gupta framed the distribution as one piece of a broader welfare architecture aimed at supporting girls from birth through adulthood.

'It is the self-confidence of Delhi's daughters that the Delhi government wants to strengthen. Our government stands with them to help them move forward with greater confidence. We want to fulfil every need related to their safety, dignity, healthcare, and well-being so that from the time a girl is born, she can be empowered through the Lakhpati Yojana,' Gupta said while addressing reporters.

CM Gupta Links Scheme to National Empowerment Push

Addressing the gathering, Gupta also connected the state-level initiative to schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the national level, describing them as complementary efforts to empower girls and women across India. She emphasised that the government's goal extends beyond education to ensuring holistic development and economic independence for women.

'We are working to ensure that as a girl child grows and reaches Class 9, she receives a bicycle and becomes more independent. Beyond this, there are several schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all aimed at empowering girls and women across the country,' she added.

BJP Protests Against AAP Over Lakshmi Yojana

The event unfolded against the backdrop of political tension in the capital. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged protests, alleging that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and legislators were attempting to obstruct the rollout of the Lakshmi Yojana, under which women are set to receive ₹2,500 monthly. A separate demonstration was held outside the office of Leader of Opposition Atishi, led by former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri.

BJP leader Harish Oberoi said women had gathered outside the residences and offices of AAP legislators to express their dissatisfaction. 'All these women have come to protest against the stand taken by Aam Aadmi Party MLAs. Our respected Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has launched the Lakshmi Yojana, under which women will receive ₹2,500. However, when the issue was discussed in the Assembly, AAP MLAs opposed it and walked out of the House,' Oberoi said.
