New Delhi, Aug 8 (NationPress) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took action on Friday regarding a north Delhi restaurant that barred a guest from entering due to their traditional Indian attire, asserting it did not align with the establishment's 'western dress' policy.
Upon learning of the incident at the Pitampura eatery, BJP legislator Tarvinder Singh Marwah demanded accountability for the disrespect shown towards Indian ethnic clothing.
Marwah expressed to IANS, "Those responsible must face legal consequences. A salwar kameez is a traditional Indian outfit. No restaurant has the right to deny entry based on such attire.”
With CM Gupta's intervention, the restaurant promptly lifted its dress code restrictions, and she took to X to announce the positive outcome.
“The management of this Pitampura restaurant has acknowledged that they will no longer enforce any attire-related limitations and will embrace guests in Indian wear. Additionally, on Raksha Bandhan, they will provide discounts to sisters dressed in traditional attire,” the CM stated in a post, accompanied by a smiley emoticon.
Her announcement was retweeted by Delhi’s Art & Culture and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, who shared short videos of the restaurant owners addressing the earlier “misunderstanding” that affected a couple on August 3.
In a video, Neeraj Aggarwal, the restaurant's director, stated, “All patrons, regardless of their attire, are welcomed at our establishment. I invite individuals from both North and South India to enjoy our family restaurant.”
This clarification followed the CM's attention to a social media video where the couple expressed their frustration over being denied entry while another guest in a mini skirt was allowed in.
“My wife was prevented from entering while another guest in a mini skirt walked right in,” the man lamented in the video.
Earlier, responding to the couple's complaint on social media, Mishra remarked on X, “This is unacceptable in Delhi… CM @gupta_rekha ji has taken serious note of the incident. Officials have been instructed to look into the matter and take prompt action.”
