New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Delhi High Court has, on Monday, issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding a petition brought forth by former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. This petition contests a trial court's ruling that mandated the framing of criminal charges against him and his family in the alleged IRCTC hotel scam.

A single-judge Bench led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma briefly reviewed the case, requesting a response from the central agency and issued a notice pertaining to both the criminal revision petition and the stay application submitted by Yadav.

The matter has been scheduled for further deliberation on January 14.

As the chief of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Yadav has contested the order issued by the Rouse Avenue Court, which determined there was adequate evidence to proceed with charges of corruption, criminal conspiracy, and cheating linked to the IRCTC scandal.

On October 13, 2025, Special Judge Vishal Gogne of the Rouse Avenue Courts authorized the trial for Yadav, his son Tejashwi Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and other co-defendants under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as the Prevention of Corruption Act, after they entered a plea of not guilty.

The special court had reserved its ruling on May 29 following detailed discussions on the charges against Lalu Prasad, his family, Prem Gupta, Sarla Gupta, and railway officials Rakesh Saksena and P.K. Goyal.

The alleged scam occurred between 2004 and 2009, during Lalu Prasad's tenure as the Union Railway Minister.

During this period, two hotels were leased without adhering to the established procedures.

One of these hotels was awarded to Sarla Gupta, wife of Prem Gupta, a close associate of the RJD leader and a Rajya Sabha MP at that time. According to the prosecution, Lalu Prasad obtained three acres of prime land through a benami company.

In his defense, Lalu Prasad has asserted that no irregularities occurred on his part, claiming that the tenders were awarded transparently, and he has sought a discharge from the case.

Point of View

This case highlights the ongoing struggle against corruption within India's political landscape. It is essential to monitor how the judiciary responds to high-profile figures and whether justice is served amidst the political turmoil.
