Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Thursday, 14 May said that education remains the strongest foundation for nation-building at a time when artificial intelligence and technology are reshaping every aspect of society. He made the remarks while addressing graduating students at the Convocation of B.R. Ambedkar University in New Delhi.

A Call Beyond the Degree

L-G Sandhu urged the graduating class to look past their academic credentials and commit to continuous learning, innovation, and leadership. He framed the convocation not as an endpoint but as the start of a larger civic responsibility.

'For the graduating students present here today, this occasion is therefore not merely the conclusion of your academic journey. It is the beginning of a larger responsibility. The knowledge and values you have acquired here must ultimately contribute to society, and to the nation, in meaningful ways,' he said.

Education as a Social Instrument

The L-G emphasised that education derives its true value only when it lifts communities, not just individuals. 'I would also urge you to remain deeply connected to the society around you. Education acquires its true meaning when it uplifts not only individual lives, but also the communities and institutions around us,' he added.

He encouraged graduates entering fields as varied as public policy, academia, law, media, entrepreneurship, social work, and the arts to carry 'a strong sense of integrity, empathy, and public purpose.'

Delhi as a Symbol of Shared Aspiration

Sandhu invoked the capital itself as a reminder of collective responsibility. 'Delhi represents both history and aspiration. It is shaped by diversity, strength, and ambition. Its future will depend significantly on the contributions of young people like you — individuals capable of combining professional excellence with social awareness and national commitment,' he said.

He also praised B.R. Ambedkar University's growing stature as a preferred institution through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), noting its commitment to inclusion, academic excellence, and critical thinking.

The X Post and the Larger Vision

In a post on social media platform X, L-G Sandhu reiterated his message to the graduates: 'I encouraged the graduates to move beyond college degrees and embrace continuous learning, innovation, and leadership. As they step into the professional world, I urged them to uphold the values of integrity and public purpose and contribute meaningfully toward building a future-ready #ViksitDilli and #ViksitBharat.'

The address comes at a moment when India's higher education institutions are under growing pressure to align curricula with the demands of an AI-driven economy. Notably, this is not the first time a senior constitutional authority has used a university platform to push the case for lifelong learning — a theme that has gained urgency as automation reshapes the labour market. Whether universities can translate such calls into structural curriculum reform remains an open question.
