Delhi Police Special Cell arrests Harry Boxer gang member Jagdish in Malda
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Police Special Cell on Thursday, 16 July arrested a key operative of the overseas-based Harry Boxer alias Golu gang, identified as Jagdish, from the Malda district of West Bengal following an extensive inter-state operation. The arrest is being described by officials as a significant breakthrough in the crackdown on organised crime targeting businesses in the Delhi-NCR region.
How the Arrest Unfolded
Jagdish had been evading law enforcement by concealing himself inside a sprawling, two-kilometre-wide mango orchard in the Kamla Bari area of Malda. The Special Cell deployed extensive human surveillance, laid a cordon around the orchard, and apprehended him at the first available opportunity, according to officials.
A Delhi resident by origin, Jagdish is described by police as a relatively fresh recruit to the gang who was, according to investigators, drawn in by what they characterised as the 'fascinating lifestyle' associated with organised crime networks.
A Pattern of Escalating Extortion
The Special Cell linked both Jagdish and his previously arrested associate to two extortion threat cases registered in the capital. In the first, a complainant reported receiving a WhatsApp call from an international number in which the caller identified himself as a member of the Harry Boxer gang and demanded ₹5 crore, threatening death if the demand went unmet. When no payment was made, the gang allegedly targeted the victim's gym, firing three rounds, and subsequently issued fresh threats under the Harry Boxer name.
In a second case registered last month, gang members allegedly fired several rounds at the residence of another victim while reiterating monetary demands — a marked escalation in tactics.
Prior Arrests in the Crackdown
Jagdish's arrest follows a series of enforcement actions against the same network. Last month, his prime associate Vikas alias Chuhiya, also a Delhi resident, was apprehended by the Special Cell in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, after a prolonged chase. Days before Jagdish's arrest, police had already detained three suspected shooters linked to the Harry Boxer gang and claimed to have foiled a plot to extort city businessmen. That operation yielded three illegal pistols — including a 9-mm calibre weapon and a Beretta — along with 26 live cartridges.
The Broader Threat to Delhi Businesses
The crackdown was triggered in part by a surge in complaints from Delhi's business community. Traders reported receiving extortion calls and messages from phone numbers with international prefixes, a pattern consistent with gang operations run by handlers based abroad. The Harry Boxer gang, reportedly led from overseas, has been linked to multiple firing-cum-extortion cases across the Delhi-NCR area.
With Jagdish now in custody and multiple associates already arrested, the Special Cell is expected to intensify its probe into the gang's overseas command structure and its local recruitment pipeline.
