New Delhi, Nov 15 (NationPress) In a significant crackdown on the illegal liquor trade, the Delhi Police apprehended a 27-year-old individual during a nighttime patrol in Paschim Vihar West and confiscated 32 cartons—totaling 1,600 quarters—of illicit liquor reportedly smuggled from Haryana into the national capital, according to the Delhi Police on Saturday.
The suspect, identified as Vikas alias Vicky, a resident of Bakkarwala, was caught transporting the contraband in a Honda Jazz vehicle equipped with a counterfeit number plate.
Officials reported that the event unfolded on November 12 when head constable Dharmender and constable Anuj were conducting their nightly patrol near DDA Park, close to Ramleela Ground in the Jwala Puri area.
The officers observed a fast-moving vehicle approaching from Camp No. 4 Red Light on Rohtak Road.
Upon noticing the police, the driver allegedly attempted a swift U-turn to escape inspection, which raised suspicions.
The patrol team reacted promptly, signaling the vehicle to halt. Police reported that the driver attempted to accelerate and flee, but the vigilant officers successfully intercepted the car and apprehended the individual.
Upon inspection, the officers discovered cartons marked “For Sale in Haryana Only,” indicating that the liquor was not intended for sale within Delhi and was being illegally transported.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Vikas has a criminal history, having been involved in three prior cases under the Excise Act.
Authorities also discovered that the vehicle's number plate was counterfeit, presumably used to obscure the vehicle's identity and avoid detection. The ownership of the car is currently under verification.
A case has been filed under Sections 33, 38, and 58 of the Delhi Excise Act at the Paschim Vihar West police station. Both the vehicle and the confiscated liquor have been designated as case property.
Officials from the Outer District police stated that this arrest is part of enhanced nighttime patrols and anti-smuggling operations directed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
“Further investigation is ongoing to trace the source and origin of the illicit liquor,” stated DCP Sachin Sharma.
