New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) The Delhi Police Crime Branch has successfully resolved a high-profile theft case involving nearly Rs 1 crore that was reportedly stolen by the infamous ‘Thak-Thak’ gang from a parked vehicle in Karol Bagh. This operation led to the apprehension of an interstate thief and the recovery of jewellery worth approximately Rs 35 lakh.
The suspect, identified as T. Sarath Kumar alias Sarat Kumar (31), hails from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. He was captured by the Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Cell (AEKC) of the Crime Branch.
Authorities reported that Sarath Kumar is a repeat offender and has been declared a proclaimed offender in four theft cases filed at police stations including Kamla Market, Connaught Place, and Lahori Gate.
The theft transpired on November 14, 2025, when the complainant, Shubham Kotawala, a jewellery manufacturer, had just collected 62 pieces of diamond and vintage jewellery along with grading certificates from the International Gemological Institute (IGI) lab in Karol Bagh.
He had placed the bag containing the valuables in his car, parked near Durga Park, and stepped away for a brief period.
Upon his return, he discovered the right-side window of his car shattered and the bag gone.
An FIR was lodged at the Karol Bagh police station under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Given the significant value of the stolen items, a specialized team led by Inspector Amit Kumar Solanki was established under the guidance of ACP Pankaj Arora and DCP (Crime) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
The team reviewed footage from nearly 90 to 100 CCTV cameras positioned in and around the crime area as well as along potential escape routes. Numerous known criminals with similar methods were interrogated.
Police indicated that careful analysis suggested the involvement of a Trichy-based gang, notorious for targeting parked vehicles near jewellery markets by breaking windows.
Through technical surveillance, the team tracked Sarath Kumar's movements to the Nizamuddin area in Delhi and set up a trap near Nizamuddin Railway Station, resulting in his arrest on December 15.
During questioning, Sarath Kumar disclosed that gang members frequently travel from Tamil Nadu to Delhi and other affluent states by train to perpetrate such thefts.
Jewellery valued at around Rs 35 lakh has been recovered from him.
Further investigations are ongoing to locate other accomplices and recover the remaining stolen assets, police reported.
