Varanasi, Sep 28 (NationPress) Thirteen homes, including the ancestral residence of the celebrated hockey player and Padma Shri recipient Mohammad Shahid, were demolished in Varanasi on Sunday as part of a road widening initiative. The demolition occurred at the Court Road intersection, which is part of the Varanasi Court Road to Sandha expansion plan.
Officials confirmed that all families affected by the demolition received compensation prior to the event.
Despite multiple warnings and a final ultimatum, residents failed to vacate the designated areas of their homes.
City ADM Alok Verma informed reporters that the ultimatum for demolition was issued last week.
"We have compensated the families and issued a week’s notice. They were advised to clear their homes from the area allocated for the road project, but upon their inaction, we had no choice but to proceed with the demolition," he stated.
Among the structures demolished was the ancestral home of Mohammad Shahid, who was instrumental in India's gold medal triumph at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Constructed in the 1920s, Shahid's home was considered a vital landmark that motivated aspiring players in the area.
The City ADM noted that of the nine family members, seven have accepted the offered compensation, while two remain in the house and have yet to decide on accepting the compensation.
Family members voiced their sorrow over the loss of their ancestral home, despite the compensation received.
"Our memories are here. This is our home. We will miss this place. Though seven shareholders took the compensation, we have nowhere else to go, so two shareholders still reside here," said Nazneen, a relative of Shahid.
Shahid received the Padma Shri award in 1986 and sadly passed away on July 20, 2016.
