Mangaluru (Karnataka), May 3 (NationPress) - The Karnataka Police have apprehended eight individuals linked to the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty, an incident that has arisen from the communal tensions in the city of Mangaluru, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.
According to police sources, the department is expected to formalize the arrests and provide an official update later today.
To track down the perpetrators, the police established five specialized teams. The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation, having been arrested from multiple locations throughout Mangaluru district. Investigators have also secured video evidence of the incident, which was instrumental in identifying and capturing the suspects.
However, Leader of the Opposition (LoP), R. Ashoka, has claimed that a week prior to the murder, Suhas Shetty received warnings from the police regarding carrying weapons in his vehicle, which had been searched.
“How did this warning reach the killers? If he had a weapon, he might have defended himself. The murder occurred within half a kilometer of police presence, yet no officer rushed to intervene,” stated Ashoka.
“Just a week ago, threats were made against Suhas Shetty, and after his murder, celebratory messages were posted by the attackers,” he added.
Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje and Mangaluru BJP MP Captain Brijesh Chowta have urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to transfer the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra has announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh for Shetty’s family.
BJP MLC C.T. Ravi and other party officials have cautioned that if police do not take action, retaliatory killings may persist in Mangaluru. “There’s no one willing to let Suhas’ murderers evade justice,” Ravi asserted.
Following Shetty’s murder, several stabbing incidents have been reported in the coastal Karnataka region, specifically in Mangaluru and Udupi, leading to a tense and unstable environment.
Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara is visiting Mangaluru today to evaluate the situation and review law and order. He plans to convene a meeting with senior officers at the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate.
The investigation indicates that the assailants first collided a goods vehicle with the car Suhas Shetty was in, followed by a group of attackers in a Swift car who armed themselves and brutally murdered him.
LoP R. Ashoka has alleged that individuals affiliated with the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Karnataka Forum for Dignity are implicated in Shetty’s murder.
Suhas Shetty was involved with Bajrang Dal and was the key suspect in the murder of Mohammad Fazil, a Surathkal resident. Shetty and his associates reportedly killed Fazil in a public setting on July 28, 2022, as a response to the murder of BJP youth worker Praveen Kumar Nettaru.
Nettaru, a BJP member from this sensitive area, was murdered during the high tensions surrounding the ‘hijab’ controversy, sparking a chain of revenge killings and numerous stabbing incidents across Karnataka.
Mangaluru also recently experienced the mob lynching of a Kerala man, Mohammad Ashraf, who was allegedly heard shouting “Pakistan Zindabad” during a cricket match.
The police are currently investigating possible links between Suhas Shetty’s murder and the recent lynching incident.
