Bhubaneswar, March 3 (NationPress) Former Union Minister and prominent hotelier Dilip Ray declared his intention to run for the Rajya Sabha elections as an independent candidate.
During a press interaction, Ray stated, “I will submit my nomination as an independent candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections on March 5. I have engaged with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal, and have gained their backing.”
The seasoned politician, who secured a seat in the upper house twice in 1996 and 2002, expressed optimism about his chances of winning this time around.
With the BJP extending its support for his candidacy, Ray mentioned that he is confident of obtaining the remaining eight votes. He indicated plans to consult with leaders from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Indian National Congress (INC) to garner votes.
“I maintain strong relations with all parties and intend to meet them to request their support. I am optimistic about receiving backing from everyone,” Ray remarked.
The ruling BJP has publicly affirmed its support for independent candidate Ray in the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
While addressing the media, state BJP president Samal confirmed that Ray has announced his independent candidacy. He further emphasized that the Odisha BJP has decided to support him based on principles.
Samal expressed confidence that Ray would achieve victory in the elections and secure a position in the upper house.
Significantly, the elections have been necessitated by the retirement of four Rajya Sabha members from Odisha on April 2. The outgoing representatives include Niranjan Bishi and Muzibulla (Munna) Khan from BJD, along with Sujeet Kumar and Mamata Mohanta of the ruling BJP.
With Ray, a veteran politician, entering the race, the competition for the fourth Rajya Sabha seat has intensified.
The main opposition party, BJD, has previously announced renowned urologist Dr. Datteswar Hota as a joint candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. The Congress party leaders have also declared their support for Hota.
