Kolkata, Oct 26 (NationPress) After a hiatus exceeding five years, direct flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou, China, are set to recommence today, with the inaugural flight scheduled for 10 p.m. from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, as confirmed by officials.

These direct connections were in service until early 2020, when they were halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In light of recent diplomatic advancements, private airline IndiGo has declared the resumption of its daily non-stop services linking Kolkata to Guangzhou, effective from October 26.

The pivotal moment occurred this year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping convened on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, facilitating a broader revitalization of flight operations.

Furthermore, it has been reported that China Eastern Airlines, a state-owned airline, will reinstate flights between Shanghai and Delhi starting November 9, operating thrice weekly on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Yu Jing, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, also shared this development on X: “Direct flights between China and India are now a reality. Kolkata → Guangzhou launches today. Shanghai ↔ New Delhi starts Nov 9, flying three times a week,” the spokesperson stated.

According to an official at NSCBI Airport, the first flight is expected to depart at 10 p.m. today.

It's noteworthy that Kolkata has a rich history with China, dating back to the British era when Chinese migrants settled in the city as traders. The city's Chinatown is renowned for its vibrant migrant community, many of whom frequently travel to China. The introduction of a direct flight will simplify travel for them.

“The direct air link will streamline logistics and cut down transit times, significantly reducing costs. This will be advantageous for businesses,” commented Rajeev Singh, head of the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata.
