Thiruvananthapuram, June 16 (NationPress) Discontent has emerged within the Kerala government, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, concerning a proposed Electronic Cluster initiative that has received initial approval from the State IT and Industries Department. State Agriculture Minister and CPI leader P. Prasad voiced his significant concerns regarding this development on Monday.
The initiative is suggested to be located in the same area as the previously proposed Aranmula Airport project in the Pathanamthitta district.
During the administration of Oommen Chandy, the airport project faced intense opposition when Prasad, as the then CPI Pathanamthitta district Secretary, along with environmentalist Sugathakumari and other leaders, protested against it, labeling it as a project that would jeopardize the environment at Aranmula due to the significant wetlands involved.
The project faced massive protests, and the Supreme Court upheld a verdict from the National Green Tribunal declaring the airport initiative non-compliant with environmental regulations, leading to the Centre's withdrawal of support and the project's termination.
Upon Pinarayi Vijayan's assumption of office in 2016, the manifesto promised to annul all approvals for the Aranmula International Airport, a commitment that was fulfilled when Vijayan’s cabinet declared the project officially cancelled.
With the previous project abandoned, a new controversy arose as the airport promoters proposed to develop an electronics cluster in the same location.
With Vijayan overseeing the IT Department and CPI-M leader P. Rajeeve as the Industries Minister, the proposal for the electronic cluster gained momentum, and preliminary approvals were being prepared. However, Prasad raised objections.
In a media statement on Monday, Prasad emphasized that no project would proceed in violation of the laws. "Our firm stance against the airport remains unchanged towards any project, as these wetlands are invaluable and cannot be converted under any circumstances. Perhaps the IT and Industries department personnel are unaware of the earlier situation," he stated.
Also firmly opposing the new project was Sudheeran, who pointed out that the NGT's ruling is publicly accessible and thus, this new initiative cannot move ahead.
Following the cancellation of the airport project, the Chief Minister, alongside the then Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar, initiated paddy cultivation at the former airport site.
