Chennai, Aug 16 (NationPress) In a significant move, the residents of Eganapuram have, for the 14th time, officially passed a resolution against the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport project during a Gram Sabha meeting. This gathering took place following the Independence Day celebrations in the village, where locals reiterated their unwavering opposition to the airport's construction.
In August 2022, the Union government had identified Parandur as the location for Chennai's second Greenfield airport. However, this announcement has sparked considerable resistance from Eganapuram and 19 neighboring villages.
The community members contend that the project threatens to devastate fertile agricultural lands, water bodies, and residential areas, jeopardizing their livelihoods and the local environment.
For over 1,100 days, residents have engaged in continuous protests, demonstrating their commitment to halting the project.
Recently, the agitation gained momentum when actress and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay visited Eganapuram, voicing his support for the villagers and promising to accompany them to the State Secretariat if necessary.
This visit has heightened public interest in the issue, with various political parties and organizations, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi led by Anbumani Ramadoss, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Naam Tamilar Katchi, expressing solidarity with the protesting villagers.
These groups have persistently criticized the government for disregarding resident concerns and continuing with the project.
Meanwhile, the State government maintains that the airport will be developed without displacing or harming residents, continuing its land acquisition efforts in the area.
However, villagers have dismissed these assurances, demanding a complete relocation of the project to another site.
Friday's resolution represents the 14th formal rejection of the airport plan in Gram Sabha meetings since its announcement. On at least six previous occasions, villagers have boycotted the Gram Sabha as a symbolic protest.
Following the resolution, residents expressed their determination to never relinquish their land and vowed to sustain their agitation indefinitely.
With villagers steadfast and political backing growing, the controversy surrounding the Parandur airport project is far from resolution, placing both the Centre and state government in a challenging position.
