Will DMK Navigate Seat-Sharing Pressures from Alliance Partners for TN Assembly Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 22 (NationPress) Negotiations regarding seat allocations within the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) are scheduled to commence this Sunday. The ruling DMK has signaled that it is likely to follow the similar seat distribution strategy as in the 2021 Assembly elections, even as various allies are advocating for an increased share of constituencies.
In the 2021 polls, the DMK contested 188 of the 234 Assembly seats, distributing the remaining constituencies among its coalition partners. The Congress was allocated 25 seats, while most other allies received single-digit figures. However, the political landscape is more intricate this time due to the inclusion of the DMDK and Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) in the alliance.
Sources within the party have indicated that the DMK leadership will first reveal the total number of seats available for each partner before discussing specific constituencies.
“Our alliance partners have already put forward their lists of preferred seats,” a senior official noted, mentioning that discussions are set to occur in phases.
Nonetheless, several partners seem resolute about negotiating more aggressively this time. A senior leader from the Left commented that while their party was limited to six seats in 2021, they are entering discussions this time with aspirations for a double-digit allocation.
The MDMK, which had contested around 15 seats using the DMK’s ‘Rising Sun’ symbol in the last election, could see its allocation adjusted due to the presence of new partners.
The addition of the DMDK has intensified expectations from the DMK leadership, with reports suggesting they may be offered between six and eight seats.
On the other hand, the MNM, which participated independently in 2021, has now joined the DMK-led alliance for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, offering support without seeking seats in return for Kamal Haasan’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
Haasan has clarified that he is not directly involved in the seat-sharing discussions and stressed that his party’s demands will be made public at the right moment, highlighting the importance of unity within the alliance.
As multiple allies push for increased representation and the potential for Rajya Sabha nominations enters the conversation, the DMK leadership finds itself in a precarious position, striving to maintain coalition unity while also safeguarding its electoral standing.
