Tragic Suicide Pact: Doctor and Wife End Lives After Daughter's Death
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, March 30 (NationPress) In a tragic incident, a doctor and his wife took their own lives following the death of their three-year-old daughter, who suffered from both mental and physical challenges. K. Gopi, working as an anaesthetist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, and his spouse Shankara Kumari (30), a nurse at the same institution, were involved in this heartbreaking case.
On Sunday, the couple attempted to end their lives by injecting toxic substances into themselves and their daughter, Mounika, at a lodge in Narsaraopet, located in the Palnadu district of Andhra Pradesh.
While Shankara Kumari and Mounika passed away on Sunday, Dr. Gopi succumbed to his injuries at a nearby private hospital the following morning.
Initial police investigations suggest that the couple was overwhelmed by depression regarding their daughter’s condition.
Dr. Gopi, originally from Satluru village in the Palnadu district, and Shankara Kumari, from Dharmavaram in the Sri Sathya Sai district, had entered into a love marriage. Their despair intensified after Mounika's birth, as she faced significant challenges.
Twenty days prior to the incident, Shankara Kumari, along with Mounika, visited her parents in their hometown. Dr. Gopi arrived from Bhopal just two days before the tragedy. On Saturday, he called his wife and daughter to Narsaraopet, where they checked into Dinesh Grand lodge.
On Sunday morning, Dr. Gopi sent a message along with photos to his sister via WhatsApp, indicating their intention to take their lives. This prompted family members to rush to the lodge, where they discovered the trio unconscious. They were quickly taken to a hospital, but unfortunately, Shankara Kumari and Mounika could not be saved.
Dr. Gopi, whose condition was critical, passed away early Monday morning.
Police have since recovered sedatives, syringes, and other related items from the lodge.
After a postmortem examination, the bodies of the family were returned to their relatives on Monday. The Narsaraopet police have initiated a case and are conducting further investigations.
