Bengaluru, Dec 27 (NationPress) The tragic case involving a 26-year-old newlywed woman, Ganavi—also known as Rashi—has taken a shocking turn as her husband, Suraj, has reportedly taken his own life, and his mother, Jayanti, is in critical condition after an alleged suicide attempt in Maharashtra, according to police reports on Saturday.
Ganavi was reported to have attempted suicide before passing away in a Bengaluru hospital on Thursday, claiming she faced ongoing harassment and rejection from Suraj and his family.
In response to her death, Ganavi's family staged a protest outside Suraj's home in Bengaluru, displaying posters of Suraj and his family while demanding their arrest.
According to police, following Ganavi's passing, Suraj, along with his mother Jayanti and brother Sanjay, traveled to Nagpur.
On the evening of Wednesday, Jayanti is said to have attempted suicide at a relative's residence.
Suraj reportedly died by hanging, while Jayanti remains hospitalized in critical condition.
No suicide note or message was found on Suraj's phone.
A post-mortem was performed in Nagpur, and an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been filed at the Sonegoan police station.
Authorities indicated that following Ganavi’s death, Suraj and his family faced accusations from her relatives, which possibly led to their departure to Nagpur. It is suggested that the pressure and shame may have driven Suraj to his tragic end, while his mother allegedly attempted suicide.
Ganavi's mother, Rukmini, has claimed that Suraj’s death resulted from guilt.
“They came to realize their mistakes. My daughter loved Suraj deeply; he couldn’t bear her death. This led him to take such drastic measures,” Rukmini stated.
“Their claims are baseless. My daughter had a good character. They could have made accusations earlier. She was reserved and never interacted with boys during her college years. Let them investigate,” she insisted.
It’s noteworthy that Ganavi and Suraj were married on October 29, hosting a lavish wedding reception in Bengaluru. They even traveled to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon. However, disputes reportedly arose during the trip after Suraj learned of Ganavi’s past relationship.
The couple’s quarrel intensified, prompting them to cut their honeymoon short and return to Bengaluru on December 21.
Upon their return, Ganavi allegedly faced rejection from her in-laws, which led her family to bring her back home on Monday.
On Tuesday afternoon, Ganavi attempted suicide and was rushed to a private hospital, where she was declared brain-dead and placed on ventilator support. She succumbed to her injuries on Thursday night.
Following Ganavi's death, her family filed a complaint at the Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station in Bengaluru, accusing Suraj and his family of dowry harassment and abetting suicide. An investigation is currently underway.
Rukmini alleged that despite being married for over a month, her daughter received no affection from her husband and was subjected to mistreatment by her in-laws, even being denied proper meals.
She also claimed that Ganavi had begged her mother-in-law not to send her back and expressed a desire to stay if shown love.
According to the family, Ganavi was hesitant to seek a divorce due to concerns about family honor.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing in both Karnataka and Maharashtra.
