Imphal/Kohima, Jan 25 (NationPress) Approximately 314.471 kg of various confiscated narcotics, valued at nearly Rs 400 crore, were disposed of in the Imphal West district of Manipur, with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and other senior officials present.

In addition, the Nagaland Police destroyed narcotics worth more than Rs 35 crore during two separate operations in the Dimapur and Mon districts.

In Manipur, the drugs were incinerated at the Shija Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Lamdeng, which included 9.884 kg of heroin, 244.409 kg of brown sugar, 26.239 kg of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets (known as Yaba tablets), 661 grams of SP capsule, 493 grams of N-10 tablets, 505 grams of pseudoephedrine tablets, and 32.280 kg of ganja.

During the event, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stated that the BJP government, upon taking office in 2017, initiated a "War on Drugs" campaign in 2018 as part of a nationwide effort against narcotics under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The fight against drugs is not merely a government initiative; it is a crucial mission to safeguard our future generations and the integrity of our nation, ensuring a brighter future for the youth of both the state and the country. A united front against drug trafficking and the drug crisis is essential,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Singh emphasized that the state administration is dedicated to transforming Manipur into a drug-free region. He revealed that since 2017, drugs valued at approximately Rs 688 crore have been destroyed, leading to over 2,000 arrests and nearly 200 convictions related to illegal drug trafficking. Following the completion of judicial procedures, seized narcotics are publicly destroyed each year to demonstrate governmental transparency, he added.

He also urged the public and officials in the state to engage seriously in the fight against drugs, stressing the need for transparency and a no-compromise stance against illegal drug activities. The Chief Minister sought collaboration from local clubs, Meira Paibis, Civil Society Organizations, and social workers for a sustained and effective campaign against drugs.

In Nagaland, the District Drug Disposal Committee eliminated various drugs valued at over Rs 35 crore in two operations across Dimapur and Mon districts. Police officials indicated that the destroyed substances included brown sugar, heroin, crystal meth, methamphetamine tablets, cough syrup bottles, and opium straw. Methamphetamine, commonly referred to as 'ice', 'Yaba', or 'crystal meth', is a highly addictive stimulant that impacts the central nervous system.

Many drugs, particularly heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, are frequently smuggled into India's northeastern states from Myanmar, which has a 1,643 km long unfenced border with four northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
