Assam Police Intercepts Drug Smuggling, Rs 15 Crore Narcotics Seized with Two Arrested

In Guwahati, on December 29 (NationPress), Assam Police successfully thwarted an interstate drug trafficking operation, recovering narcotics valued at Rs 15 crore, as stated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday.

The operation took place in the Cachar district, which borders the states of Manipur and Mizoram.

The confiscated narcotics included Yaba tablets, which were being smuggled from a neighboring state. Additionally, two individuals were arrested on charges of drug trafficking.

CM Sarma shared the news on the social media platform X, declaring, "Narcotics worth ₹15 crore seized. Acting on reliable intelligence, @cacharpolice executed a special operation at Ghoongur Bypass, successfully stopping a vehicle from a neighboring state. A search revealed 50,000 YABA tablets hidden in five packets."

"Two individuals have been apprehended, and the vehicle has been confiscated," he added.

It is worth noting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his address at the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Agartala, emphasized the need to eliminate the negative perceptions surrounding drug-related activities in the northeastern states.

"Significant efforts have been made to combat drug-related issues, but it is crucial for Chief Ministers and relevant stakeholders to intensify their actions," he remarked.

He highlighted that the central government is committed to a nationwide initiative aimed at achieving a 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' (drug-free India), urging northeastern states to strive for a drug-free environment.

The Union Home Minister also called on Chief Ministers to place a strong emphasis on the effective execution of three new criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

Union Minister Shah announced that in February 2025, he would convene a meeting with Chief Ministers to evaluate the progress and implementation of these new laws.

He added that since the Modi government took office at the Centre, a total of 20 accords have been signed to promote peace and harmony in the northeastern states, with 10,574 members of various militant groups surrendering across the region.
