Guwahati, March 21 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that law enforcement successfully dismantled a drug operation in the Nagaon district, confiscating narcotics valued at Rs 1 crore.

One individual has been taken into custody on charges related to drug trafficking.

In a statement on his X account, CM Sarma highlighted, “Our fight against drugs continues; heroin valued at ₹1 crore seized. In an operation backed by intelligence, @nagaonpolice stopped a vehicle at Gereki and recovered 461 grams of heroin after a thorough search. One person has been arrested in this case.”

A senior police official noted that illicit drugs are frequently trafficked into Assam from neighboring states such as Manipur and Mizoram.

During a recent visit to the state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the government's unwavering stance against drug cartels, following a significant crackdown on an international narcotics network in the northeast. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) successfully dismantled the operation in coordinated efforts in Guwahati and Imphal, seizing narcotics worth Rs 88 crore and apprehending four individuals.

In a post on X, HM Shah stated, “No leniency for drug cartels. We are intensifying the Modi government’s initiative to achieve a drug-free Bharat, with a large consignment of methamphetamine tablets worth ₹88 crore seized, and four members of the international drug cartel detained in Imphal and Guwahati regions.”

He commended the NCB's efforts, describing the operation as a product of an effective combined investigative strategy. “This drug seizure is a testament to the successful execution of this integrated approach. Our pursuit of illegal drugs continues. Heartfelt congratulations to the NCB team,” the Home Minister remarked.

Last year, while addressing the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Agartala, Shah emphasized the need to dispel negative perceptions associated with drug-related activities in the northeastern states. “Significant efforts have been made to combat drug issues, but further action is needed from Chief Ministers and all stakeholders,” he said.
