Guwahati, May 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the Assam Police have successfully intercepted significant drug trafficking activities in two distinct operations.
As per CM Sarma's statement, in Golaghat, authorities confiscated approximately 512.58 grams of narcotics, which has an estimated international value of Rs 3 crore.
Three individuals were apprehended during this operation.
In another significant raid in Kokrajhar, police seized 963.19 kg of ganja, added CM Sarma.
He emphasized that the fight against drugs will persist in Assam.
In the previous week, the Assam Police had also seized narcotics valued at Rs 9.5 crore and detained three individuals, one of whom was a woman, in two separate actions.
A spokesperson for the Assam Police stated that based on credible intelligence regarding illegal drug transportation from Silchar (located in southern Assam) to Guwahati via the Silchar-Coimbatore Express train, a team from the Panbazar police station was stationed at Guwahati Railway Station.
Upon the train's arrival, a female suspect was identified and arrested.
Following legal protocols and in the presence of independent witnesses, the search resulted in the recovery of 20,000 highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth Rs 5 crore, along with a mobile device and Rs 1,000 in cash.
The accused, Parvina Khatun Bibi (31), hails from Sadialer Khuti village in Cooch Behar district, West Bengal.
In a separate operation, the Assam Police apprehended two drug peddlers in Salchapra, located in the Cachar district of Assam, seizing 847 grams of heroin and 4.035 kg of opium.
The cumulative estimated value of the seized drugs amounts to Rs 4.5 crore.
Authorities suspect these narcotics were smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram, entering Assam via an illegal route.
Myanmar, sharing a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—is a crucial transit point for drugs like heroin and methamphetamine tablets entering India.
The Chin State of Myanmar is notorious for trafficking various drugs, exotic wildlife, and other contraband through six districts of Mizoram—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
