Guwahati, Sep 18 (NationPress) The Assam Police have successfully disrupted a significant drug trafficking operation, seizing narcotics valued at over Rs 12 crore in the Cachar district, as reported by police on Thursday.
A senior police official stated, "Acting on reliable intelligence, we executed an operation in Silchar town within the Cachar district. We intercepted a vehicle at the Kathal bypass area of Silchar, where narcotics were discovered. The investigation team confiscated approximately 40,000 Yaba tablets housed in four containers within the vehicle."
According to police assessments, the total international market worth of the confiscated drugs exceeds Rs 12 crore.
"Our valuation of the seized narcotics stands at Rs 12 crore 70 lakh in the international market. One individual, identified as Dilwar Hussain Laskar, has been arrested on drug trafficking charges, with a case filed against him under applicable laws," the officer mentioned.
In related news, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently emphasized the extensive efforts being made against the drug trade, noting that smugglers are employing various innovative methods, including drones, to transport narcotics.
The Chief Minister elaborated that traffickers are now using advanced strategies to deliver drugs from remote locations, posing significant challenges.
"In Assam and Meghalaya, drug couriers are predominantly active, and our battle against them is ongoing. However, traffickers continue to utilize diverse means for transporting consignments, with drones being one of the latest methods," he added.
Speaking to reporters, he remarked: "The drug issue is extensive, and every state government is working diligently to thwart drug trafficking. Assam is vigorously combating the narcotics network with unwavering commitment and a zero-tolerance stance against drugs. I believe that persistent operations are crucial to eliminate this societal menace."
The Chief Minister also pointed out that the masterminds behind the drug network often reside outside India and operate through foreign agents.
"The kingpins of the narcotics trade manage their operations from abroad via local agents. They adopt various tactics to evade law enforcement. For instance, if multiple individuals travel together from Guwahati to Delhi, each carrying a small amount of heroin, it becomes challenging for law enforcement to apprehend them. Nevertheless, security teams are relentlessly working to stay ahead of drug traffickers, which forms the basis of Assam Police's strategy to dismantle drug networks," CM Sarma concluded.
