Assam Police seized 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately ₹10 crore from a truck intercepted in Cachar district on Tuesday, in one of the state's largest single-haul narcotics recoveries in recent weeks. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the operation and praised the personnel involved. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.

How the Operation Unfolded

The seizure took place at the Old MVI Check Point in the Digharkhal locality of Cachar district, where a police team intercepted a truck during a routine enforcement check. Officers discovered a secret chamber allegedly built into the vehicle to conceal the contraband. The tablets were recovered from this hidden compartment, and one suspect was apprehended on the spot.

Further investigation is underway to trace the origin of the consignment and identify other members of the trafficking network.

Chief Minister Sarma shared news of the bust on social media platform X, using wordplay to mark the occasion. 'Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. So did this drug haul. Good job @cacharpolice and @assampolice,' he posted, lauding the coordinated effort by Cachar Police and Assam Police.

A Pattern of Major Seizures in Cachar

The latest operation is part of a sustained enforcement push in Cachar, which has emerged as a key pressure point on the Northeast's narcotics trafficking corridor. The district's proximity to cross-border drug routes has made it a recurring site for large-scale recoveries.

In August, Assam Police and Assam Rifles jointly seized around 1.1 lakh Yaba tablets and 223 grams of heroin valued at more than ₹28 crore in Cachar, leading to the arrest of three alleged traffickers. In July, a joint operation across Cachar and Hailakandi districts netted 80,000 Yaba tablets worth nearly ₹8 crore and resulted in two arrests. In June, Cachar Police seized 29,200 suspected Yaba tablets worth approximately ₹2.9 crore in Silchar, arresting one person.

Taken together, these operations reflect a systematic disruption of narcotics supply networks operating through Assam's southern districts.

Assam's Broader Anti-Narcotics Drive

The repeated seizures underline the Assam government's stated commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks in the state. Chief Minister Sarma has consistently maintained that the administration will pursue its campaign until Assam is free of the drug trade. Intelligence-based checking, inter-agency coordination, and surveillance of known trafficking routes have been central to the enforcement strategy.

With investigations ongoing, authorities are working to establish the full supply chain behind the latest consignment and whether the arrested individual is linked to wider trafficking operations.
