Assam/Agartala, Jan 16 (NationPress) In recent actions, law enforcement officials have eradicated narcotics worth Rs 156.84 crores in Assam and approximately 90,000 ganja (cannabis) plants, valued at Rs 3.5 crore, in Tripura on Thursday, as reported by officials.
An official from the Assam Police stated that the authorities in Sribhumi district (previously known as Karimganj) destroyed drugs valued at Rs 156.84 crores in the Sharif Nagar locality. These drugs had been confiscated from various locations within the district over recent months.
The destruction event was attended by significant personnel, including Deputy Inspector General of South Range Kanakjyoti Saikia, Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, and the District Commissioner among others.
Both DIG Saikia and SP Das praised the efforts of the Sribhumi Police, noting that 196 drug traffickers have been arrested and imprisoned in recent months. They expressed optimism that continued legal measures would ultimately lead to the eradication of drug-related offenses in the district.
The destroyed drugs included Heroin (14 kg), Yaba Tablets (15 lakh), cannabis (6.15 crore kg), Phensedyl Cough Syrup (2.83 lakh bottles), and other intoxicating capsules and tablets (51,000).
District police chief Das, who assumed his role in late 2022, has been proactive in anti-drug initiatives within the district. Under his leadership, banned substances valued at approximately Rs 222 crores were destroyed in the previous year alone.
In Tripura, the Assam Rifles, in conjunction with local police and forest officials, dismantled 90,000 cannabis plants spread across about 110 acres (44.5 hectares), valued at Rs 3.5 crore in the Kathalia locality of Sepahijala district.
A defense spokesperson indicated that this extensive operation underscores the unwavering commitment of the Assam Rifles to tackle the drug issue and shield the region from its detrimental impacts.
The spokesperson emphasized that the success of this initiative was achieved due to vital cooperation from the local administration, showcasing the importance of a unified approach in confronting drug-related issues.

In a separate operation, the Assam Rifles seized foreign cigarettes valued at Rs 26 lakhs in Mizoram’s Champhai district. The entire shipment, contained in 20 cartons, has been transferred to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai for further legal action.
