A spokesperson for the defense stated that the para-military forces and Tripura Police conducted their joint operation in Batadhala, located in the Sepahijala district, on Wednesday afternoon. During this operation, marijuana worth Rs 5.35 crore was confiscated, and 15,000 marijuana saplings, valued at Rs 60 lakh, were destroyed.
The spokesperson mentioned that based on reliable intelligence, the joint team acted swiftly, delivering a substantial blow to illicit drug cultivation and smuggling operations in the region, which is situated near the India-Bangladesh border.
The confiscated marijuana was transferred to the police for subsequent legal actions, while the unlawful plantations were eliminated on-site to prevent any further exploitation.
This successful operation underscores the ongoing commitment of the Assam Rifles in combating drug trafficking and maintaining law and order, as stated in an official announcement.
The Assam Rifles, in close collaboration with law enforcement agencies, is dedicated to protecting the area from the threats posed by illegal drugs.
A police representative indicated that they are currently searching for the individuals involved in marijuana cultivation.
In Tripura, illegal marijuana cultivation occurs, and in Manipur, poppy cultivation takes place in hilly regions, with these substances being smuggled out of the area for drug production. Security forces frequently destroy marijuana and poppy crops as part of their ongoing efforts to combat the illegal drug trade.
Additionally, various drugs, particularly heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, are frequently trafficked into the northeastern states of India from Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km-long unfenced border with four northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
