Tripura Authorities Seize Drugs Valued at Rs 78 Crore, One Arrested

Agartala, Dec 21 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies successfully intercepted a staggering 3.9 lakh methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 78 crore, and apprehended a drug trafficker in Tripura, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.
Sources from the Assam Rifles indicated that this operation was part of a meticulously coordinated effort, involving the Customs Department and Tripura Police, aimed at disrupting the drug trafficking networks within the northeastern region.
“Acting on precise intelligence reports, the security forces intercepted an astonishing shipment of 3.9 lakh methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 78 crore in the international market from the Gonda Twisa area in the Dhalai district on Friday night,” the sources disclosed.
The operation led to the apprehension of Rakesh Miya (33), a resident of Melaghar in Sepahijala district.
“This significant achievement underscores the steadfast commitment of the security forces in combatting the threat of cross-border drug trafficking and protecting the youth of the region. Methamphetamine tablets (commonly referred to as Yaba tablets), notorious for their severe impact on individuals and communities, are frequently targeted by drug syndicates that exploit vulnerable groups,” stated an Assam Rifles report.
The report further noted that with Union Home Minister Amit Shah visiting the state and the security forces on high alert, this achievement exemplifies the collaboration and vigilance of Assam Rifles, Customs, and Tripura Police in fighting organized crime.
This successful operation reinforces Tripura’s role as a fortified barrier against drug syndicates and highlights the dedication of law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and prosperity within the state.
Ongoing investigations aim to dismantle the network responsible for this shipment, the report added.
Between November 20 and December 20, various drugs, including heroin and methamphetamine tablets valued around Rs 280 crore, were seized in Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam.
All drugs were confiscated in these three northeastern states after being smuggled from Myanmar.
The regions of Mizoram, southern Assam, and Tripura serve as a convenient corridor for drug trafficking after being illegally transported from Myanmar.
Various narcotics, especially heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, are often unlawfully transported into India’s northeastern states from Myanmar, which shares a lengthy 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states – Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
