Agartala, Jan 21 (NationPress) In a carefully orchestrated operation, Assam Rifles confiscated a significant amount of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 12 crore in Tripura, leading to the arrest of two drug peddlers, as announced by officials on Tuesday.

A Defence representative revealed that following a covert operation, Assam Rifles personnel apprehended two individuals involved in drug trafficking and seized 60,000 methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba tablets, estimated at Rs 12 crore from their possession in the Salbagan area of West Tripura district on Monday night.

The detained suspects have been identified as Kanai Das (36) and Kishan Kumar Sarkar (32), both natives of West Tripura district. The confiscated narcotics and the arrested individuals were subsequently transferred to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for further inquiry and legal action.

This operation highlights the steadfast dedication of Assam Rifles in the fight against smuggling and in protecting the region from the detrimental impacts of drug trafficking, the spokesman remarked.

Recently, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that over the past three years, 1,665 cases have been registered under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, resulting in the arrest of 2,697 drug peddlers for their involvement in unlawful activities.

Moreover, Saha, who oversees the Home and Health and Family Welfare sectors, reported that in the last three years, law enforcement agencies, including Tripura Police, have seized drugs equivalent to Rs 1,587.47 crore, which includes significant destruction of ganja (marijuana) plantations.

Amidst the drug-related issues, the count of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS surged to 10,126 in 2023, up from 7,707 in 2021. “Since 2015, at least 512 individuals have succumbed to HIV/AIDS-related complications,” the Chief Minister conveyed to the Assembly.

He added that in addition to various measures taken against drug-related issues and the proliferation of HIV/AIDS, the state government’s ten departments—including Home, Education, Health and Family Welfare, Sports, and Youth Affairs—have collaboratively initiated a range of awareness programs statewide. The seizure of drugs, predominantly trafficked from Myanmar, remains a frequent occurrence in the northeastern states, particularly in Mizoram, Assam, Tripura, and Manipur.

Different narcotics, particularly heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, are routinely smuggled into the northeastern states of India from Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km-long unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km).
