Agartala/Aizawl, Feb 4 (NationPress) The Assam Rifles, along with various security forces, has effectively dismantled a marijuana (ganja) cultivation site, confiscated drugs valued at Rs 3.50 crore, and disrupted an inter-state drug trafficking network in Tripura and Mizoram, as reported by an official on Tuesday.
A total of 11 individuals involved in drug peddling were apprehended.
A Defence spokesperson indicated that, during a significant operation targeting illegal narcotics cultivation, the Assam Rifles destroyed around 75,000 marijuana plants worth approximately Rs 2.90 crore at Bijoynagar in Tripura's Sepahijala district, which borders Bangladesh.
This operation, executed in close collaboration with Customs Preventive Force and Tripura Police, severely impacted the illicit drug trade in the area.
The destroyed marijuana plantation spanned 100 acres across two locations.
The official emphasized that this coordinated effort highlights the dedication of security forces to combat the drug trafficking issue and to promote a drug-free environment.
The Assam Rifles remains alert in its fight against narcotics cultivation and trafficking, aiming to safeguard the local population from the detrimental effects of illegal drug commerce, the Defence spokesperson added.
In another incident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) collaborated in a successful operation to dismantle a drug peddling gang, arresting nine individuals from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Tripura.
The GRP and RPF operatives detained these nine suspects at the Agartala railway station on Monday night, recovering 15,000 bottles of cough syrup valued at Rs 25 lakh.
A GRP representative noted that other members of the gang are still at large and are being pursued.
The detainees admitted to previously smuggling similar cough syrups from outside Tripura into neighbouring Bangladesh, where various cough syrups, including Eskuf and Phensedyl, are misused as drugs by the youth.
In a third incident, the Assam Rifles seized 50 grams of heroin valued at Rs 35 lakh and apprehended one Tingngaihkhawmi (40), a resident of Ngur village in Mizoram’s Champhai district, which borders Myanmar.
