Agartala/Aizawl, June 17 (NationPress) The Assam Rifles have successfully intercepted contraband valued at over Rs 5.15 crore in Tripura and Mizoram, leading to the arrest of a drug peddler within the last 24 hours, officials reported on Tuesday.
According to a spokesperson for the Assam Rifles, the paramilitary forces acted on confidential intelligence to execute an operation that resulted in the confiscation of 170 cartons of illicit foreign cigarettes near Chandrapur, located on the outskirts of Agartala.
The foreign cigarettes, which have an estimated worth of Rs 5.1 crore, were subsequently transferred to the Customs Department for ongoing investigations and appropriate legal measures.
“This operation highlights the Assam Rifles’ steadfast dedication to combat illegal activities and protect the nation's economic interests through vigilant monitoring along the India-Bangladesh border,” stated a representative from the Assam Rifles.
In a separate incident, the Assam Rifles, collaborating with officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department, conducted a vehicle inspection in the Zote area of eastern Mizoram's Champhai district and seized 19.2 grams of heroin estimated at Rs 14.4 lakh.
A drug peddler was arrested in relation to the seizure.
The detained individual and the confiscated contraband have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department for further investigation and legal actions.
Authorities suspect that both the foreign cigarettes and heroin were smuggled in from neighboring Myanmar.
Various substances, including methamphetamine tablets and heroin, are routinely trafficked from Myanmar and illegally transported to numerous regions of India and Bangladesh through the northeastern states.
Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—is a significant transit point for drugs and other contraband entering India. The Chin state of Myanmar acts as a hub for smuggling various narcotics, exotic wildlife, and other contraband through six districts in Mizoram—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
