Agartala, Feb 12 (NationPress) Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) have independently intercepted and obliterated marijuana (ganja), foreign cigarettes, and various other illicit items valued at Rs 6.65 crore in Tripura, officials reported on Wednesday.
A Defence spokesperson indicated that Assam Rifles personnel, in a decisive action against narcotics trafficking, managed to seize 351 kg and subsequently destroy around 1,089 kg of marijuana in Manikyanagar, located in West Tripura district.
The value of the seized ganja is projected to be Rs 1.58 crore, while the destroyed marijuana is estimated at Rs 3.27 crore.
This operation was executed in collaboration with Customs officials, underscoring Assam Rifles’ dedication to combatting the drug trafficking crisis in the northeastern region.
The successful operation is a part of Assam Rifles' ongoing initiative to counteract unlawful activities in border territories and to uphold national security. The paramilitary force remains alert and devoted to breaking narcotics smuggling networks active in the northeast, as stated by the spokesperson.
A BSF representative noted that by employing a non-lethal approach, the border security unit in the Tripura frontier successfully thwarted attempts of infiltration and smuggling from Bangladesh on Wednesday.
BSF personnel seized sunglasses and foreign cigarettes in Srinagar, situated in South Tripura district, adjacent to Bangladesh.
In a separate operation along the India-Bangladesh border, cannabis, codeine-based syrups, and other contrabands were also confiscated from Sepahijala district.
The BSF remains unwavering in its commitment to monitor the border and prevent illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border, according to the spokesperson.
In the meantime, Tripura Police recently confiscated a substantial quantity of Methamphetamine tablets, also referred to as Yaba tablets, valued at over Rs 30 crore and apprehended three drug traffickers.
The Tripura Police in Dhalai district intercepted a truck transporting 9.24 lakh Yaba tablets worth Rs 28 crore and arrested the driver and his aide, both hailing from Assam.
The police also intercepted another vehicle in North Tripura district, recovering 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 2.5 crore from a concealed compartment and apprehending the vehicle's driver.
