Kolkata, Oct 16 (NationPress) The Durgapur gang-rape case continues to unfold as police made a significant find on Thursday, recovering a condom from the crime scene. Additionally, at least 11 condoms were found in the hostel room of Wasif Ali, the male friend of the victim who has been arrested, according to police sources.
The discovery came as authorities expanded the perimeter of the crime scene during ongoing investigations. On Thursday, an extra 50 metres was cordoned off, encompassing the area adjacent to the initial site. This location is situated in a wooded area near a private medical college and hospital.
Earlier in the day, police revisited the crime scene with Wasif Ali, who was detained due to discrepancies in his statements. A forensic team also returned to the location to gather further evidence, leading to the recovery of the condom. Investigators later searched his hostel room, where they uncovered 11 more condoms. Forensic samples were also collected at this time.
On October 10, a second-year medical student from Odisha was tragically gang-raped by five individuals in a secluded area outside the private medical college and hospital in West Burdwan district's Durgapur. Based on the victim's complaint, police arrested all five suspects, who are currently in custody. Subsequently, the victim's male friend was also taken into custody following inconsistencies in his account during interrogation.
The victim's father has since called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter to ensure swift justice for the victim. He expressed intentions to return to Odisha and leave West Bengal permanently.
