Kolkata, Oct 21 (NationPress) After six days of intense questioning, the police have identified inconsistencies in the accounts provided by the male friend of the Durgapur gang-rape victim and the five youths detained from the local area.

Officials stated that the police are actively seeking to uncover missing links in this troubling case.

Investigations have revealed that the medical student was involved with her male friend, a classmate. They had ventured out on that ill-fated night from the private medical college and hospital in Durgapur.

Initially, it was claimed that they had stepped out for dinner. However, further inquiries disclosed that they were discovered in a compromising situation in a wooded area by three of the five accused youths.

As they demanded money from the couple, the male friend was permitted to leave to fetch cash. During his absence, one of the assailants raped the medical student while two others observed. Subsequently, two additional youths arrived at the crime scene. The victim's mobile phone was seized, and upon the male friend's return with money, they were allowed to leave, according to police sources.

According to the investigation team, from the outset, the male friend, Wasif Ali, misled the authorities, causing significant confusion in the investigation process. Officers are currently analyzing the statements from the victim, her male companion, and the five detained youths. However, multiple discrepancies continue to emerge.

All suspects are scheduled to be presented in court on Wednesday, as their police custody is set to expire. The police intend to request an extension of custody for further questioning and investigation.

Meanwhile, the medical student was discharged from the hospital last Friday. She is currently staying in a rented accommodation in Durgapur under police protection, accompanied by her mother. Police personnel have been deployed outside her residence for her safety.

On October 10, the second-year medical student from Odisha was reportedly gang-raped by five individuals in a wooded area near a private medical college and hospital in the Durgapur region of West Burdwan district. Following the victim's complaint, all five accused were apprehended. Authorities have indicated that only one individual was directly involved in the physical assault on the medical student.

Later, the male friend was detained after investigators discovered inconsistencies during his interrogation. He remains in police custody.

The victim's father has since called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident to ensure swift justice against the perpetrators.
