Kolkata, March 23 (NationPress) The 10-day motorcycle journey titled ‘Wings and Wheels: Glorious IAF, Magnificent North East’ was inaugurated by Air Marshal Surat Singh, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Air Command, in Shillong, Meghalaya on Saturday.
The expedition, which commenced on March 18 from Air Force Station Bagdogra, features a group of 38 riders, including Air Warriors, Agniveervayu (Women), and civilian riders from Royal Enfield. The team navigated through the stunning landscapes of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya, covering nearly 2900 km before arriving at Shillong, the headquarters of the Eastern Air Command.
“Along the way, the riders engaged with local communities. The expedition not only fostered a sense of affability, camaraderie, adventure, and patriotism among the youth of the northeastern states but also aimed to highlight the numerous career prospects available in the IAF through motivational talks and interactive sessions at various educational institutions,” a senior official mentioned.
In his address, Air Marshal Singh commended the team for their unwavering enthusiasm and spirited approach to this adventurous journey.
He emphasized the significance of incorporating sports and adventure into one’s lifestyle to maintain physical fitness and mental agility. The Eastern Air Commander also called for greater efforts to recruit more youth from the northeastern states into the Indian Defence Forces.
Air Marshal Singh also expressed gratitude towards Royal Enfield and the BPCL Group for their essential support in ensuring the expedition's success.
“The inclusion of Agniveervayu (Women) in the team was particularly noteworthy. They interacted with young women they met during the journey to dispel myths surrounding the Agniveer scheme. They clarified that all Agniveers have a fair opportunity to continue with the Armed Forces after four years. For those who may need to transition out, job opportunities are available in the Central Armed Police Forces,” the official added.
