Could the Onset of the Southwest Monsoon in 2025 Be the Earliest Since 2010?

Synopsis

The potential early arrival of the southwest monsoon in 2025 may set a new record since 2010. With weather conditions aligning favorably, the IMD has provided insights into what this means for various regions across India. Stay tuned as we explore the implications of this year's monsoon forecast.

Key Takeaways

  • The southwest monsoon may arrive earlier than June 1, possibly by May 27.
  • Conditions for the monsoon's declaration have been technically met according to the IMD.
  • Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for multiple states.
  • Fishermen are advised to stay out of the sea during this period.
  • The monsoon's progress impacts agriculture and water resources significantly.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 21 (NationPress) Weather officials indicate that the onset of the southwest monsoon this year may be the earliest recorded since 2010. As per the India Meteorological Department, the typical onset date for Kerala, which signals the start of the four-month southwest monsoon season across the nation, is June 1.

As the monsoon winds gain strength, they will gradually cover other regions of the country throughout June, ultimately reaching all areas by mid-July.

Previously, the IMD forecasted that the monsoon onset could occur around May 27, with a potential variance of four days. However, officials noted on Tuesday that it could happen within the next four to five days, marking a possibility of it being the earliest onset since 2010.

On Wednesday, the IMD confirmed that the criteria necessary for declaring the monsoon's arrival over Kerala have been met. The requirements include that at least 60% of the 14 designated weather stations report rainfall of 2.5 mm or more for two consecutive days.

Additionally, the westerly winds must reach a depth of 600 hPa, and the zonal wind speed over a specified area should range between 15–20 knots at 925 hPa. The outgoing long wave radiation value must also drop below 200 wm-2 in a designated area.

The IMD has issued warnings of heavy rainfall affecting regions including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, the Konkan area, Goa, central Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until May 24.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from Wednesday through Monday along the coast of East-central and Southeast Arabian Sea, as well as the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, Konkan & Goa, adjoining south Gujarat, and the Lakshadweep area.
