New Delhi, Jan 16 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has fiercely criticized the Election Commission of India, accusing the ECI of diminishing public trust in democracy by allegedly 'facilitating' vote theft. This accusation has been a consistent theme from the Congress party, aimed at undermining the credibility of the electoral body.
Gandhi’s strong rebuke of the election authority came just as counting began for 29 civic body elections in Maharashtra, including the BMC, reinforcing the opposition's allegations of voter fraud in these municipal elections. The day prior, the Thackeray cousins also raised concerns about election integrity, questioning the reliability of the indelible ink used to mark voters.
The BJP swiftly responded to Gandhi’s allegations, suggesting that he was attempting to distract from the likelihood of defeat and instead making the ECI a convenient target.
This morning on X, the Congress leader stated, “The Election Commission is gaslighting citizens; this is how trust has eroded in our democracy. Vote theft is an act against the nation.”
BJP leaders defended the election process, asserting that the opposition was facing imminent defeat in the BMC and other civic bodies of Maharashtra, prompting these tactics.
Labeling the Rahul Gandhi-led opposition as the “bahana brigade,” Shehzad Poonawala remarked, “Are they conceding defeat before counting concludes? Rahul is reverting to his usual tactics - discrediting, distorting, and disseminating misinformation.”
He acknowledged that while the ink issue warranted investigation, there were no reports of fraud during Thursday's voting.
Another BJP spokesperson indicated that the 'parivarvadi' party was evading accountability and fabricating false narratives.
“Every election cycle, the 'Parivarvadi' concocts allegations to avoid scrutiny, which ultimately fail in the courts of law and public opinion,” Pradeep Bhandari expressed on X.
Significantly, a controversy erupted on Thursday over claims that the indelible ink used on voters was easily erased, jeopardizing election integrity.
Opposition leaders, including local Congress representatives, alleged that at various polling booths, markers rather than ink were utilized to mark voters, and these markings could be removed with sanitizer.
As the situation escalated, the State Election Commission, initially reluctant, called for an inquiry and informed the media that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to verify the claims circulating on social media and determine their authenticity.
It also reassured the media that standard practices were maintained, and the same ink was indeed employed in the BMC elections.
