West Bengal Elections: ECI Appoints Central Observers for Pre-Poll Phase
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that it will assign one Central observer to each of the 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal to supervise the pre-poll nomination process.
Sources from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal revealed that these 294 Central observers will consist of either officials from the Central government or officers from other states.
"Currently, a total of 1,444 officers are receiving training from the ECI. Once the training concludes, these officers will be deployed across various election-bound states and Union Territories. Out of these, 294 are specifically allocated for the Assembly constituencies in West Bengal," the CEO's office source stated.
The ECI has observed that previous elections have seen numerous reports of violence in the state during the pre-poll nomination phase.
"The majority of complaints regarding pre-poll violence during the nomination phase involve voter intimidation and threats against opposition party workers and their polling agents. There have also been issues raised about the non-deployment of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel during the pre-poll nomination period.
This time, the Commission aims to effectively tackle these concerns, which is why it has decided to assign one Central observer for each of the 294 Assembly constituencies during this phase," the insider from the CEO's office explained.
Moreover, these 294 Central observers will be empowered by the ECI from the moment polling dates are announced, along with the enforcement of the model code of conduct.
The final voters' list for West Bengal, excluding cases with "logical discrepancies" pending judicial review, will be released. Additional lists will be issued in accordance with the judicial progress.
Meanwhile, the ECI is anticipated to reveal the polling dates right after the Holi festival, which falls on March 4. This time, there is a likelihood of the elections being conducted in fewer phases compared to previous polls.
The CEO's office in West Bengal has already recommended a single-phase election this time; however, the final decision rests with the ECI.
