Kolkata, March 17 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed on Tuesday the deployment of 557 general observers, 188 police observers, and 366 expenditure observers across the poll-bound states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, in addition to overseeing by-elections for eight Assembly constituencies spread across six states.

Remarkably, West Bengal stands out as the sole state to have the highest allocation of general observers, with one observer assigned to each of its 294 Assembly constituencies.

In contrast, states like Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry will have fewer general observers than the total number of their respective assembly constituencies.

West Bengal will also feature the greatest deployment of police observers at 84, while Tamil Nadu will have 40, Assam 35, Kerala 17, and Puducherry just four. When it comes to expenditure observers, Tamil Nadu leads with 151, followed by West Bengal with 100.

The Commission has mandated that all observers report to their designated Assembly Constituencies by March 18.

According to the notification issued by the ECI, "Upon their arrival, the observers will publicly disclose their contact information and will designate a specific time each day to meet with candidates, political parties, their representatives, or any member of the public to address election-related concerns."

The Commission designates Central Observers based on the authority granted by Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to aid in the facilitation of free and fair elections. They also ensure the smooth and effective management of the electoral process on the ground, as noted in the statement.

In West Bengal, elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29.

The first phase on April 23 will see voting for 152 Assembly constituencies, while the second phase on April 29 will involve 142 constituencies. According to the ECI's current calculations, a minimum of 2,300 companies of CAPF will be deployed for each phase.
