New Delhi, June 28 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress MP, Derek O'Brien criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday, claiming that the constitutional entity is being exploited by the BJP to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) through indirect means.
This statement was made during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and West Bengal.
As the critical Bihar Assembly elections draw near, the ECI has commenced a verification initiative to evaluate the eligibility of each voter in the state.
However, O'Brien raised concerns regarding the timing and intention of this initiative, suggesting it is politically motivated to influence the electoral process.
At a press conference in New Delhi, alongside fellow Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Sagarika Ghose, he remarked, "We respect the ECI as a constitutional body, but it should not become an operational arm of the BJP. Citing a BJP internal survey, O'Brien suggested that this drive was initiated to counteract the party's unfavorable electoral outlook in West Bengal.
"Why is this verification drive being launched suddenly? We have proof that it's being done because the latest BJP internal survey for Bengal indicates they might secure only 46 to 49 seats in the assembly elections. In their desperation to alter the narrative, they resort to such tactics," he stated.
He also expressed concerns regarding the lingering issue of EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Cards) in West Bengal.
"On the EPIC card issue, it was in Kolkata that the West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee highlighted this matter. All the INDIA bloc parties were unified during the last Parliamentary session. The ECI had assured that this issue would be settled by April 30, 2025. We question the ECI about what resolutions have been made?" O'Brien inquired.
Drawing a provocative comparison, O'Brien likened the voter verification initiative to practices in Nazi Germany, stating, "The ECI is attempting to introduce the NRC through the back door. In 1935 under the Nazis, individuals were required to present an Ancestor Pass. Is this the new version of that Nazi Ancestor Pass?"
"All the INDIA bloc parties will address this matter both in and outside Parliament," he added.
O'Brien elaborated on the procedural aspects of the ECI's revised voter verification criteria, claiming it demands excessive documentation.
"The ECI is executing an initiative called Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll, starting in Bihar, and subsequently in Bengal. Under this, both new and existing voters must provide proof of birth and birthplace for those born before July 1987, proof of birth and birthplace for self and one parent for those born between July 1987 and December 2004, and proof of birth and birthplace for self and both parents for those born after December 2004. If these documents are not submitted within a month, your name will be removed from the voter list," he explained.
