Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 21 (NationPress) The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar, issued a directive on Wednesday to Rajeev Kumar, the Acting Director General of West Bengal Police, emphasizing the need to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling from earlier this week. This directive is aimed at ensuring a completely peaceful law and order scenario in the state during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
A formal communication was sent to Kumar from Pawan Diwan, the Secretary of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which demanded stringent action regarding this matter.
This communication was also shared with Nandini Chakraborty, the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, and Manoj Verma, the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, instructing all district collectors, police commissioners, and district police superintendents to strictly follow the Supreme Court's orders and maintain law and order during the ongoing SIR.
The ECI cautioned the state government that failure to comply with the apex court’s directive would lead to severe consequences.
“Any non-compliance with the directives or any disturbances during the SIR process will result in strict action,” stated the communiqué, a copy of which is with IANS.
The ECI also urged the state government to ensure sufficient manpower is allocated to Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, for deployment at locations such as panchayat bhawans, block offices, and other venues where hearings on claims and objections to the draft voters’ list take place.
“Each district collector and superintendent of police must ensure adequate staff and forces are present to facilitate the smooth execution of SIR activities at these locations. The Director General of Police, West Bengal, along with the Commissioner of Police (Kolkata), district superintendents, and collectors are tasked with guaranteeing a disturbance-free environment for SIR-related activities,” the communiqué stated.
